50 years of KartSport in the Wellington Region

KARTSPORT WELLINGTON 50thCELEBRATIONS

KartSport Wellington turns 50 in 2010 so let the celebrations begin.

Kartsport Wellington evolved out of the Mana Kart Club which started racing on a track at Duck Creek in early 1960. The original track was situated in the area now known as Whitby. Urban sprawl in the early 1970’s saw the track disappear in 1974.

In 1975, after a year of searching, the track site at Kaitoke in the Rimutaka Forest was leased from the regional Water Board (now known as the Wellington Regional Council). The site was not much more than a swamp. However, undeterred, members at the time worked hard and with a lot of earthworks created a 457 meter track that was opened in 1976 by the late Denny Hulme.

In 1987 the track was extended to 626 meters long. As the popularity of karting increased the facilities in 1993 were again improved to create a larger pit area, covered pits and the creation of the “top carpark”.

Again in 1998 and more recently the need for improvements to keep pace with the sport meant a further extension was added and the track, now 772 metres long, was widened.

The addition of new clubrooms with a viewing deck and 50 metre long grandstand in the last few years has made Kartsport Wellingtons track one of the best for drivers and specatators alike.

To celebrate this occasion KartSport Wellington is planning a dinner on Friday July 30th. This coincides with racing action at one of the clubs flagship events, the Upper Hutt Grand Prix. Racing action takes place at CRC Raceway on Saturday 31st July and Sunday 1st August. This weekend will also host some ‘fun’ racing events, more details to follow.

The history of the club is well documented with past newspaper clippings, club magazines and event programmes. This material will be on display during the weekend.

The club is trying to make contact with as many past members as possible. If you are a past member, or know of a past member, or are interested in more information about the club please contact us at www.kartsportwellington.co.nz or club@kartsportwellington.co.nz.
